  • David Brown

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Wichita, Kansas, David began playing the guitar at age 14 after brief stints playing the piano, trombone and drums. Initially inspired by the sounds of Van Halen, Rush and Led Zeppelin, David’s musical interests soon took a drastic and life changing turn after being exposed Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery and other jazz musicians.

His interest in jazz led him to the University of North Texas for his first two years of college where he was a Jazz Studies major under Jack Peterson and Fred Hamilton. While there he also played in the Advanced Guitar Ensemble and world renowned Lab Bands and studied classical guitar as his primary instrument.

David graduated cum laude from The Wichita State University in 1992 with a BA in music performance while studying jazz and improvised music with Craig Owens. He also played in various big bands, combos and guitar ensembles while having the opportunity to play with such visiting musicians as Bob Mintzer and Billy Cobham. David was also founding member and vice-president of the Creative Music Society.

David’s musical journey gives him a unique palette from which to draw. Performance experiences ranging from musical theater pit bands, touring and playing locally with original and cover projects (including a D.O.D. tour of the Middle East), solo guitar performances, studio sessions as well as work as a transcriber with iSong all inform his playing and teaching. David has playing experience in a wide variety of styles including rock, jazz, blues, classical, reggae, funk, electronic/experimental, dixieland, country and more. As a result, David never discriminates against any musical styles, but encourages his students to pursue whatever style that moves/speaks to them.

Music education has been a passion of David’s since teaching his first students in 1990. He taught at the DeeAnn Brown Music Studio (Wichita, KS), Annetta Smith Musical Offerings (Derby, KS), Zoo Music II (Garland, TX), Brook Mays Music (Irving, TX) and the Dallas School of Music (Carrolton, TX) prior to opening David Brown Music Studio in 2008.
